For many people, their daily routine involves an automobile. For me, it’s a bicycle. The joy of coasting down Capitol Hill in the morning is a sensation that I look forward to every day. Our cities are vibrant, intriguing places to live, work, and play. But they haven’t always been notably bike friendly.
We are making moves in the right direction. Take a look around your city and notice the changes. Additional bike lanes are being added to many streets. Municipal bike sharing programs like B-cycle offer access to wheels in dozens of convenient locations. Businesses are outfitting their storefronts with locking stations instead of parking lots. Google Maps recently added a trails and routes feature for bikers. The proof is in the pudding. Social events like New Belgium Brewing’s Tour de Fat and Denver Cruiser Rides continually draw record crowds to celebrate bike culture. That community is passionate and people want to be a part of it.
We forgot how practical and enjoyable bikes are. Humans are innately curious and have tested the boundaries by creating bikes that we can ride up mountains and ones that do tricks. We are again realizing the practicality and novelty of getting from one point to another on a bike.
Tupac Shakur said it right. “It’s time for us as a people to start making some changes. Let’s change the way we live.” Let’s change the way we commute. Let’s change the way we experience our surroundings. Let’s change.
